Pastoral care is at the heart of our school ethos and values here at Hiba. We treat every child as an individual and support their needs, potential, limitations, circumstances, opportunities and expectations. We develop the whole child, by providing support and offering opportunities to enable every individual to flourish in an emotionally and physically safe environment. Our commitment to pastoral care is specifically designed to not only bring academic achievement, but also experiences that will develop positive characteristics in our children. They will develop emotional skills to meet the challenges that society will place before them.

Hiba Academy Shanghai's pastoral care offers pupils support and guidance beyond their academic studies, creating a tight-knit community of care and compassion. It encompasses personal, social, and emotional wellbeing and is designed to help pupils develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed both in and out of school.

Hiba Academy Shanghai promotes a culture of inclusion that is rooted in ethical and responsible academic practices and community wide behaviours. The school is guided by the principles of the International Baccalaureate Organisation and recognises inclusion as ''an ongoing process'' that aims to increase access and engagement in learning for all pupils by identifying and removing barriers (IBO 2018).
Hiba Academy Shanghai acknowledges the diversity of its learners. The cognitive, social, emotional, physical wellbeing needs of pupils are considered to enable their access, engagement, and success when learning. Hiba is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, non-discriminative and supportive environment for all.

In support of inclusive practice, the school has a Head of Inclusion assigned to provide oversight across the school. This member of staff is ably supported in both the primary and secondary by additional members of staff, including qualified counsellors.
Wellbeing lessons are taught to pupils in all grades. They complement the formal curriculum, the CCAs and pastoral care, to create the conditions for an engaging and enriching life at school. Members of our school community will experience wellbeing through success in academic learning, sports or the arts. Through reflection, pupils will have the opportunity to discover ways to enhance their own wellbeing while also supporting the wellbeing of others.

'Wellbeing' is embedded in everyday life at Hiba. In primary school, our Wellbeing curriculum, guided by the PEEC (Positive Education Enhanced Curriculum) model, reflects the bilingual and bicultural aspects of our school. We aim to lead dedicated Positive Education classes, where pupils can be taught the key concepts of wellbeing so they can live healthy and fulfilling lives.
In Secondary school, all pupils in all grades receive weekly wellbeing lessons that complement the formal academic curriculum. These lessons embed the International Baccalaureate's ATL skills, including thinking, communication, research, social, and self-management skills. These skills will be incorporated into various wellbeing units to help pupils develop the skills in the context of their own wellbeing.

The wellbeing lessons aim to help pupils flourish and feel good by developing engagement, relationships, self-regulation, resilience, perseverance, and healthy routines. They also focus on achieving goals, maximising potential, and cultivating a sense of meaning and purpose. The lessons aim to create a deeper-level connection with oneself and others, leading to a more authentic and sustainable impact on the world. Ultimately, the wellbeing lessons aim to cultivate inner joy, optimism, positive emotions, confidence, and a growth mindset.
