Hiba Academy Shanghai Awarded Official WASC Accreditation

15 Sep 2025

Hiba Academy Shanghai has achieved a major breakthrough in the field of international education accreditation. After nearly a year of preparation and undergoing the accreditation process, the school made the exceptional achievement of skipping the candidacy stage and, in June, officially received accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

WASC, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, was established in 1962 and is one of six major accrediting bodies in the United States recognised by the US Department of Education. It is responsible for ensuring the quality of education in both public and private schools, colleges, and universities. Many world-renowned institutions, including Stanford University and the University of California system, are accredited members of WASC.

The WASC accreditation process sets extremely high requirements for schools, demanding in-depth collaboration from all departments — from academic teaching, administration, faculty development, pastoral care, to operations — to provide detailed reports and feedback. After submitting the written application, Hiba also underwent an on-site evaluation by a WASC visiting team. The team, composed of education experts from around the globe, conducted school tours, observed classes, and interviewed pupils to carry out a more multi-dimensional and direct assessment of teaching, faculty, facilities, and campus life.

Following accreditation, Hiba will now enter the self-study stage. During this period, the school must continue to meet WASC’s standards, which cover every aspect of school life from governance and teaching to support services.

WASC accreditation is undoubtedly a powerful endorsement of Hiba’s educational quality, international outlook, and sustainable development. It is not only a recognition of Hiba Education but also lays a solid foundation for the school’s long-term growth. For Hiba pupils, WASC accreditation will enhance the international recognition of their academic achievements and diplomas, boosting their competitiveness in applying to universities worldwide. The rigorous accreditation process also drives continuous improvement in teaching methods and curriculum design, creating more opportunities for teachers’ professional development.

Yet the meaning of education has never been confined to the result of a single accreditation — the real test for any school is its willingness to engage in ongoing self-reflection, to continually adjust and optimise, and to make a lasting positive impact on pupils’ individual growth and the collaborative progress of the community.

▲Hiba has attained a wide range of prestigious educational accreditations

At present, Hiba has attained a wide range of prestigious educational accreditations. These include recognition as an IB World School, membership of the Council of International Schools (CIS), and accreditation from Times Higher Education, etc. Upholding the philosophy of holistic education, Hiba will continue to empower pupils, creating ever more opportunities and possibilities for their individual development.
